warrior nun is a suspenseful supernatural drama with strong action pieces and discussions about faith. Of course, the supernatural aspects are a bit of a stretch for entertainment purposes, but it’s important to have those conversations that highlight what it really is to be evil.

The series deepens as it battles creatures throughout, and Ava as a character evolves with each encounter. These supernatural shows may tire viewers of the “monsters of the week” episodes on regular cable TV, but the Netflix shows have been able to cut the excess and make them work better.

This adaptation of Sabrina the teenage witch tale is a dark coming-of-age story.

According to IMDB, this series is a family saga with a supernatural twist set in a German town where the disappearance of two young children uncovers the relationships between four families.

This Netflix series is a little scarier than others, mostly because it’s set in a remote location. When children are involved, things get a little more troubling and families question who is really bad.

Van Helsing (2016)

By now everyone knows who Van Helsing is, and he’s probably as famous as Dracula. This series is a reimagined version of the classic story we all know and love. According to IMDB synopsis, this series explores a distant relative of famed vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing named Vanessa. She is revived only to find that vampires have taken over the world.

Van Helsing is on a similar level to Buffy and also works against forces of evil. The gender bend for the TV series gives her a fresher take on the character and the world. And a female-led vampire-hunting series shakes up the subgenre a bit, just like warrior nun.

Shadow and Bone (2021)

When shadow and bone was released, the internet took over. Written by Leigh Bardugo, the book series is a wonderful fantasy and many readers were absolutely thrilled that it was adapted. More importantly, it was adapted as a television series because there is so much to unpack. According to the synopsis on IMDB: The series explores two sides, the light and the dark. The forces of darkness conspire against orphaned cartographer Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) when she unleashes an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world.

This book adaptation only had eight episodes in its first season, but The Darkness is what sold audiences. It takes those fantastical, supernatural elements and tells a candid story about Alina.

Shadowhunters: Instruments of the Underworld (2016)

This is one of the most underrated series about demon hunting. This series uses supernatural elements in a fun way by making them part of Clary’s lineage. With her mother gone missing, Clary (Katherine McNamara) must venture into the dark world of demon hunting and embrace her new role among the Shadowhunters, according to the IMDB synopsis.

Again, fans were thrilled to know that this lengthy book series, written by Cassandra Clare and Joshua Lewis, would be adapted for television because there is so much to explore. Therefore many fans of warrior nun were also satisfied with the series.

Guardian (2019)

One of the darker and more famous DC comics that really put Zack Snyder on the map got his own television series in 2019. According to the synopsis on IMDB, this series is set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws. Guardian takes on the nostalgia of the original, groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own.

One of the best comics out there in DC Dark has many connections to each character’s moral compass when it comes to venturing down a dark path. There are conversations that highlight these ideologies and theories, making this one of the best shows of 2019. She is also deeply rooted in the corruption within the justice system, being a major talking point throughout the series.

Stranger Things (2016)

The Duffer Brothers uniquely take us back to the ’80s as the tide of nostalgia sweeps through viewers, the supernatural elements sneaking through and reminding everyone that they are seeing something supernatural with children making these discoveries. Similar to warrior nun They all try to fight off these creatures from different realms.

The series begins with a missing boy, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), who has been kidnapped by something from another world. His friends and his mother are trying their best to find him, but when they meet a young girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), they find out that she is connected to that other world. The show has explored the Upside Down every season, but the Duffer Brothers really laid the groundwork in this first season.

Snowbreaker (2020)

snowpiercer is an interesting series because it has been adapted several times, but this one moves a little differently and works like a supernatural drama. What does it really take to survive when everything goes wrong? According to the synopsis on IMDB, this series takes place seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, the remnants of humanity inhabiting an ever-moving train circling the globe where class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival play a role out. There are many unexpected obstacles in this series that send the characters into a frenzy as they try to master their own survival.

12 Monkeys (2015)

The concept of 12 monkeys has always been interesting since it was first made into a movie. Written by Chris Marker, the book is an underrated favorite for many. The 2015 series follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future, who arrives in the present on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will nearly wipe out humanity, the synopsis on IMDB. Well, anything related to a plague is a bit unsettling, but watching these characters on their mission is very entertaining. And again they were able to expand the world through a television series.
