AMother Worrel’s favorite Christmas present as a child was a harbinger of his future life.
A year before he moved to Hawaii, the owner of Hewn and Southwind Press received an island-themed Lego set — which he remembers being called “Big Kahuna” or something like that.
“Maybe that had an impact,” he joked. “My brother and I spent hours building this. We put a lot of effort into just recreating it while having a lot of different options.”
Born in Olathe, he moved to Hawaii with his wife after college and started a screen printing business. They then moved back to his hometown in 2020 — where he founded Southwind Press in May 2021 after the pandemic shut down his Hawaii shop.
In August, he opened his Hewn sewing shop and Southwind apparel line under Southwind Press. Everything from design and pattern making to cutting and sewing is done in-house, Worrel said.

When Worrel was on vacation in Hawaii, he particularly missed the lights on the Country Club Plaza and the possibility of a white Christmas, he said.
“Putting up a Christmas tree in tropical weather just never felt right,” he explained.
Worrel wasn’t able to watch many Kansas City Chiefs games on TV from the islands, either.
“Often the time change just didn’t sit well with the games,” he continued. “Either they were out too early in the morning or vice versa.”
He’s happy to be home and reconnected — especially with Kansas City’s recent athletic success — something he lacked growing up on the subway, Worrel said.
“It’s definitely a different atmosphere in the city,” he added.
