Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and for radio fanatics like me, that means another year to follow the radio stations playing Arlo Guthrie’s seasonally appropriate “Alice’s Restaurant.” Given the strangeness of recent years in the face of COVID, nostalgia is probably a big reason listeners turn to the radio for a familiar tune during times of stress. It could be something that reminds you of the past, whether it’s a memory of “Alice’s Restaurant” from the ’60s or ’70s, or a memory of Thanksgiving preparations or celebrations at relatives’ homes more recently.
I have been documenting this radio ritual for many years and was delighted to speak to THE Alice as part of our preparation for the subdued 2020 2020 holiday season. Be sure to listen to our Radio Survivor podcast talk with Alice Brock for an insight into how Guthrie’s song came about and why it has resonated with so many people.
“Alice’s Restaurant” has been an on-air tradition for decades, with fans calling broadcasters each year to confirm it’s airing again. While researching this year’s list, I noticed a post from a DJ who was saddened at not having the song aired on the radio for more than 40 consecutive years, largely due to scheduling issues broadcasting a soccer game. Earlier this week, longtime WCMF moderator Dave Kane-O wrote on Facebook:
..I’ve had MANY requests to take you to Alice’s Restaurant this year. I am humiliated and flattered to no end, and I sincerely thank you. Unfortunately things aren’t looking good for a show this year and I’m sorry for that… Sooooooo at least I’ll be posting my personal greeting to you guys here on my Kane O FB page around 12pm Thursday and providing a link to listen to ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ for your enjoyment. I KNOW it’s not the same anymore (what is?!) and I was really hoping to host it for the 42nd year in a row, but… nothing is forever. Except my sincere, ever loving appreciation for ALLA Y’all! So you have the “basic ingredients” for our Thanksgiving tradition, just not in the way you’re used to…
The PS to this story is that DJ Dave Kane-O will be playing “Alice’s Restaurant” over Facebook Live instead. So his WCMF and WRUR fans can tune in at 9am to continue their Thanksgiving listening tradition with their favorite DJ.
We wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving 2022! If you’re dying to tune in to a radio station to hear “Alice’s Restaurant” this year, check out the options below. As always, this is an incomplete list.
