Bundesliga side Bochum apologize to Germany for celebrating former Arsenal player Takuma Asano’s World Cup goal in Japan’s shock win

VFL Bochum put national ties aside as they celebrated their star man’s World Cup-winning goal.

Takuma Asano scored the winning goal to round off a huge upset in Qatar as Japan came from behind in a 2-1 win over Germany.

Asano has played much of his career in the German Bundesliga since moving to Europe in 2016.

After a stint at Arsenal, he played for Partizan Belgrade before moving back to Bochum in the summer of 2021.

But while the Bundesliga side will be disappointed their country falls short in the World Cup opener, they saw the bright side as they celebrated their star’s victorious moment.

Along with a beaming emoji next to Asano’s name, Bochum then said: “Sorry, @DFB_Team-En…”

Of course, Asano’s goal wouldn’t have meant so much if Japan hadn’t equalized with Ritsu Doan 15 minutes from time.

Doan is another member of the Japanese squad who plays his football in the German Oberliga, this time at SC Freiburg.

Freiburg also took to social media, albeit with a more muted message, which simply translated as “Congratulations to @doan_ritsu.”

It was a big day for Doan and Asano, but no doubt they are hoping Germany has a successful competition too.
