Canada will make their debut at the 2022 World Cup while Germany take on Japan

Saudi Arabia shocked the world on Tuesday by beating Lionel Messi and Argentina 2-1 in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Could another surprise be in the offing?

Canada are returning to the World Cup for the first time in 36 years and have a tough task to start off against the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Belgium. Croatia, runners-up at the 2018 World Cup, drew with Morocco in a goalless final. Germany vs. Japan and Spain vs. Costa Rica round out the middle of Day 4.

As four-time world champions, Germany are looking to take revenge for their early exit from the 2018 group stage. The Germans start the 2022 season in 2022 against Japan, who are participating in a World Cup for the seventh time in a row.

Japan is very familiar with Germany, four of its regular players play in the top division of the German Bundesliga. While there is an injection of youth on the Japanese side, defender Yuto Nagatomo stands out. He denies his fourth World Cup appearance. The 36-year-old has scored four goals in his 138 games for Japan.

This is the first World Cup meeting between the two countries in men’s football.

After starting the tournament with unusually high goals in seven games, three games ended in goalless draws, including this one.

Modric had the best chance on both sides in the first half. His team finished the game with 65% possession. Croatia failed to capitalize on any of the five deserved corners. Achraf Hakimi meanwhile had the chance to ennoble a set piece from the center of the goal in front of the penalty area, but Dominik Livakovic saved.

At a time when numerous sports leagues are trying to shorten the duration of their games, FIFA extends their World Cup games in record time.

An unprecedented amount of stoppage time was added in Qatar, highlighted by England and Iran playing in the longest World Cup group stage game in tournament history with a combined time of 117 minutes. Contributing to that was 14 minutes of extra time in the first half of the game, followed by 13 minutes in the second half in England’s 6-2 win, each of which set records for overtime in World Cup history, according to statistics site Opta Jo. But what is stoppage time, how does it work and why is so much added to this World Cup? Here’s what you need to know

Morocco fans were audible throughout the match, with a distinctive whistle that deterred Croatia with every attack. They were also quite vocal during the national anthem.

Morocco had to make a substitution after the absence of Noussair Mazraui. He struggled with a blow to the hip area for most of the second half and had to be put on a stretcher.

Mazraoui, a full-back for Morocco and German Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich, had one shot on target, 39 touches and four tackles in his 60 minutes on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia has suddenly become the most popular underdog at the World Cup. On Wednesday morning in Souq Waqif in central Doha, many fans carried Saudi flags or congratulated those who were. A table of English fans let out a loud cheer as a Saudi fan walked by and waved his flag and shouted “Argentina!” they cheered him again. — Nancy Armor, Doha, Qatar

With a clear chance from a throw-in, the ball landed on Modric’s deadly left foot. The midfielder had a direct shot on goal from around 25 meters out, but his shot went over the bar. He knew he had missed a golden opportunity. The teams go into half-time scoreless.

The first half was even, with plenty of intensity in midfield, but the end result was lacking on both sides. Croatia had a small possession advantage at 59% and the only shot on goal.

The most threatening chance for both teams came in injury time in the first half. Ivan Perisic started the attack for Croatia. Borna Sosa crossed to Nikola Vlasic, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou intervened. A great save from the goalkeeper when he was really challenged for the first time.

At the start of Group F, Croatia begin their quest to build on the run from 2018 when they reached the World Cup final but lost 4-2 to France.

Although Croatia is a small country, it has a strong presence in the biggest football leagues – especially in midfield. Mateo Kovacic plays for Chelsea, Marcelo Brozovic starts for Inter Milan in Italy and Luka Modric is considered one of the greatest midfielders currently in the game. In 2018 he became the first player since 2007 whose name was not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon D’or, an award for the best football player in the world.

Meanwhile, Morocco are taking part in a tournament for the sixth time, having progressed through the group stage just once in 1986. Morocco is usually strong in preparation for the World Cup but struggles once there.
