Croatia vs Morocco, LIVE streaming info FIFA World Cup: When & Where to watch, Predicted XI, Head-to-Head

PREVIEW

Croatia have won their last five games and lost once in 16 months, but the 2018 runners-up, led by midfield wizard Luka Modric, will start their World Cup campaign against Morocco on Wednesday with little fanfare and few chances of glory.

Zlatko Dalic’s side, who lost to France in the final four years ago, are so unpopular that bookmakers beat them 50-1 to win the trophy this time.

These are higher rates than Denmark and on the same level as Serbia, which they probably like.

“It’s going to be difficult. But it’s also good that maybe we don’t have that much pressure because we did great things in Russia. But we want and still want to achieve more,” said striker Andrej Kramaric.

With the pressure of expectation off their shoulders, Dalic’s side can go about their business out of the spotlight, where they will hope to continue a wave of momentum into the tournament.

They won their qualifying group, conceding just four goals and losing just one, in their opening game away to Slovenia in March 2021.

They also led their Nations League group ahead of world champions France, Denmark and Austria and go into the tournament on a winning streak that culminated in a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the final friendly.

While it may have lost some of the leading names from 2018, such as forward Mario Mandzukic and midfielder Ivan Rakitic, there is no shortage of talent among its ranks, particularly in midfield.

Modric, the 2018 Player of the Tournament, has one last chance at glory at the age of 37 and is likely to be part of a formidable midfield trio alongside Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic and Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic against Morocco.

Brozovic has shaken off a muscle tear and played 70 minutes against the Saudis, easing fears over his participation in the tournament.

It will start its Group F season at the Al Bayt stadium against a Moroccan side whose build-up has been marred by controversy over their manager after they sacked Vahid Halilhodzic in August following a player selection dispute and replaced him with Walid Regragui.

One of the players at the heart of this dispute, Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, was ruled out by Halilhodzic on disciplinary grounds but recalled by Regragui despite only making two starts for his club this season.

Morocco, who have featured at five previous World Cups, also suffered injury damage as striker Amine Harit was sidelined with a knee injury.
