There were more surprises at this World Cup 2022 in Qatar as four-time tournament winners Germany were stunned by Japan in their debut match. The Germans rose after a penalty, but in the second half the Japanese coach made some changes and completely rolled over the Europeans, Flick had no options, no answer and the World Cup of surprises continued as the Nippon team won the game 1-2
But with Day 4 out of the way, we had a fantastic Day 5; Cristiano makes his debut after his problems at Manchester United. PSG star Neymar JR also makes his debut for the Brazilian team. Last day of the first matches of the group stage.
How and where to watch and follow the games
World Cup games today (all times ET)’
Group G: Switzerland-Cameroon (5 a.m.)
Super balanced game. The Swiss have been doing great in international competitions lately. They knocked out France at the last European Championships and will want to continue that run. The team is led by team captain Granit Xhaka who has been fantastic for Arsenal this season and wants to maintain his current form for his national team.
The African team comes in incognito mode but with a story behind them. Cameroon have always been a tough team to beat and they found a way to compete at a high level. Their biggest stars will be Liverpool defender Joel Matip and striker Maxim Choupo-Moting.
Group H: Uruguay v South Korea (8am)
This promises an exciting game with high intensity and many chances to score. The Charruas are a difficult team to play against. They fight for every centimeter, for every ball and run for 90 minutes at a time. However, they know how to assert themselves. They have too much experience in these competitions and a great young team run by a mix of veterans. Valverde, what a player, the best player in the Real Madrid squad at the moment. El Pajarito can change a game in a minute and he will want to team up with Darwin Nuñez to make it happen.
The Asian team is not a team to be taken lightly. They have speed, they have heart and above all they are a super-disciplined team. So we can expect a similar game as the Japanese had with the Germans. Quick pauses looking for space. Son Heung-min will be the Koreans’ best player and the team will try to find him and put him behind a slow Uruguay defence.
Group H: Portugal v Ghana Rica (11am)
All eyes are on Cristiano Ronaldo! The Portuguese player has had a turbulent time over the past few weeks following his interview with Piers Morgan and his words about Manchester United, and as a result, the team and the player severed all connections. So the star doesn’t have a team at the moment and this could be a way to show off his forgotten talents. But let’s not forget that Portugal are also Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Joa Felix, probably one of the best teams by lineup in the competition.
The Africans will be clinging to Thomas Parley and Iñaki Williams to make the dream come true. This team is a far cry from the 2010 quarter-final team that lost to Uruguay on penalties. But this team, like Cameroon, knows how to take part in these tournaments and can cause several problems. Portugal must watch their speed.
Group G: Brazil v Serbia (2pm)
The favorites to win the tournament are playing against a very difficult team like Serbia tonight. Neymar and company will make their debut on the final day of the first game of the group stage to cement their title chances and let all viewers know they mean business. It doesn’t matter who plays for her tonight. They are all in great form, especially Neymar who has been fantastic for PSG.
Serbia was perceived by many as the black horse of the tournament, an incognito for the competition. Milinković-Savić, Filip Kostić, D. Vlahović and team captain Dušan Tadić form a great team. Brazil will have a hard time beating this Serbian team.
