Everything we know about the sequel

While the superhero industry (and frankly, the entire movie industry as a whole) is dominated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that hasn’t stopped others from throwing their hats in the ring. One of the greatest examples of this is Sony, which has owned the rights to one of Marvel’s most popular characters, Spider-Man, since the original 2002 film. They have primarily focused on their own villain universe, currently with the first two poison films, and with solo films for Kraven the Hunter (2023) and El Muerto (2024) in preparation. However, there is another major Sony film that no one really saw coming that made Marvel history as the first Marvel Comics adaptation to earn a coveted Oscar. This movie was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which prevailed Ralph breaks the internet (2018) and Incredible 2 (2018) for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in A Historical Surprise.

COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY

There’s a good reason for that, because Into the Spider-Verse is almost universally regarded as a masterful animated screen debut for fan-favorite comic book character Miles Morales (Shameik Moore). With the premium ingredients of an innovative art style, fleshed out characters, an emotionally compelling narrative and more, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not only great Spiderman movie, it’s arguably the greatest Spiderman movie ever made. Now fans can return to the Spider-Verse with Miles and friends Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), the second part of a now planned trilogy.

The highly anticipated sequel is already showing fans more of what they wanted to see, mostly other universes we didn’t get to see in the last film. Now we’ll see not one, not two, but six different universes in the film, each with their own distinctive art style, as Miles and his band of interdimensional Spideys band together to take on a new threat. Across the Spider-Verse has had a tumultuous release schedule with repeated delays, so to find out everything we know so far about Miles Morales’ next adventure, simply read below for all the details revealed so far.

The first trailer gives us our first glimpse of the return to this incredible animated multiverse, albeit with some outdated information. The teaser picks up right where the last movie left off and Miles listens to the hit Into the Spider-Verse “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee. His relaxation is compounded by the return of Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) through another interdimensional portal. Miles is nervous and surprised to see his crush after their latest adventure from another dimension, and Gwen doesn’t explain how or why she’s back, instead inviting “New York’s One and Only Spider-Man” for a swing around town a.

Suddenly, we see Miles falling into new dimensions in his own spider suit, again each with their own distinctive art style. As he literally falls through the multiverse, he is attacked by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaak), which debuted in the credits Into the Spider-Verse. Unlike the other Spider-Men Miles has met, this one seems a bit more hostile and gets into a fight before the teaser switches to a title card. This title card is a little dated and no longer has the “Part One” subtitle, although a third film has been confirmed and is on the way. The release date given at the very end of the two-and-a-half-minute trailer is also no longer accurate.

Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse be streaming or in theaters?

Just like the last movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be a theatrical release that will finally find its way into cinemas in the summer. It’s not yet known if and when the film will make its streaming debut, especially considering Sony often works with a variety of streaming services.

What is the release date of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the many films hit with a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being pushed back to October 7, 2022 from its original date of April 8, 2022. That’s the date seen in the trailer above, but the film has since seen another significant delay. Now the film is set to be officially released on June 2, 2023. Hopefully we don’t see another delay, but if it means getting a sequel that lives up to the sky-high heights of the original, we’ll be happy to wait.

Humans must face a villain more powerful than anything they have ever faced.

We don’t currently know who is responsible for this “multiverse of madness” in Spider-Man’s vast gallery of villains, nor how they are connected, but we do know that there will be a multitude of characters who will be in attendance be. Writers and producers (and the creative duo behind them The Lego Movie) Phil Lord and Christopher Mueller confirmed there will be 240 characters in total and the story will take place in six universes, making it an ambitious undertaking to rival even something this big Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Who is making Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have become two of the biggest and most respected names in feature animation after starring in The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009), The Mitchells against the machines (2021) and more. They return to write and produce Across the Spider-Verse, and while they initially intended to do something on the same scale as the last film, the sequel has since evolved and grown to consist of the largest crew for an animated film ever assembled. The film will feature a new trio of directors leading this massive undertaking, each of whom is experienced in the industry Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Kemp Powers (Soul), and Justin K Thompson (Star Wars: Clone Wars). Also joining Lord and Miller in the writing department is someone with experience writing for the Marvel Multiverse. David Callaham (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

We don’t have time to list all of the more than a thousand members of the crew, but to name a few of the creative leads, we return Into the Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pembert (Steve Jobs), Editors mike andrews (shrek 2), production designer Kevin Aymerich (arcane) and Patrick O’Keefe (Fragile), Artistic Director Ariz Khalid (Mrs Miracle) and costume designer Brooklyn El Omar (Raya and the last dragon).

Many members of the cast from the first film return for the sequel, most notably Shamiek Moore (stimulants) and Hailee Steinfeld (hawk eye) as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy respectively. There are also returnees JakeJohnson (New girl) as Spidey mentor Peter B. Parker, Nicholas Cage (wrong way driver) as old-fashioned Spider-Man Noir, Brian Tyree Henry (eternal) as Miles’ father Jefferson Davis and Luna Lauren Velez (dexter) as Miles’ mother, Rio Morales. Also Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Miguel O’Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, a version of the Web-Head from a technologically advanced future. This is the third separate Marvel continuity to have involved Isaac, first as the titular villain in the 20th Century X-Men universe movie X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and most recently as one of the MCU’s newer stars moon knight (2022). We also found out recently Issa Rae (Unsure) and Daniel Kaluya (Black Panther) will round off this new Spider team as Spider-Woman and Spider-Punk.

While we don’t know who the main villain of the film is, we do know that there are some enemies that we will see Jorma Tacone (Hot Rod) as vulture and Jason Schwartzman than the more obscure spot we got to see in a still from the film earlier this year. After all, the supporting cast is now also there Shea Whigham (Agent Carter) as Gwen’s father George Stacy and Rachel Dratch (Harley Quinn) as Headmaster of Miles.

When can we expect the third movie in the Spider-Verse trilogy?

Even if “Part One” is no longer in the title, Across the Spider-Verse will still be the first half of a two-part story. The sequel, currently titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Versewill be released less than a year later on March 29, 2024, bringing this epic, groundbreaking trilogy to a close.
