Formula 1 2022 in Abu Dhabi: How to watch, stream, preview and get TV info on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

There will not be as much drama as at the 2021 edition of the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix, where the Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Cup have already been decided. But that doesn’t mean there’s no drama at all.

For Sebastian Vettel it will be the end of a career in the series, because the four-time world champion will retire from Formula 1 when the checkered flag falls on Sunday. For Mick Schumacher, it could also mean a time when he must decide which path to take, as one of the garage’s worst-kept secrets has finally been revealed when Haas said it was different from the seven-year-old’s son world champion Michael Schumacher would separate, and that Nico Hulkenberg will take the seat in 2023. And for Red Bull Racing, it will be an opportunity for current world champion Max Verstappen to prove he doesn’t have hard feelings with teammate Sergio Perez, and he can do so by helping the Mexican, second in the points standings ahead of Charles To become Leclerc by Ferrari.

So there’s still a lot to unpack, so let’s start with Red Bull Racing, where the team released a statement saying they made a team order mistake at Interlagos. Verstappen and Perez also appear to have reached an agreement as Verstappen said he would love to help the Mexican finish better than Leclerc should the opportunity arise.

Second place in the Constructors’ Cup is also up for debate, as Ferrari’s once-sizable advantage over Mercedes is now just 19 points thanks to the return to form shown by the Silver Stars at Mexico City and Interlagos. The Yas Marina Circuit has always been a track where Lewis Hamilton and the team in general have performed well and certainly Toto Wolff and co will be looking to snatch second place from Ferrari in the Constructors’ Cup to add momentum to the off-season.

As for Haas, moving to an veteran like Hulkenberg is likely a reaction to the massive auto bill Schumacher racked up this season. Daniel Ricciardo, who has yet to announce what his future plans are after 2022, and Nicholas Latifi, who is out at Williams, will also be watching the outcome and wondering where it is going. Schumacher’s name was mentioned in a possible reserve role at Mercedes the next season, while Ricciardo’s name was mentioned in a similar role at Red Bull Racing.

What to expect

This will be the second year at the reconfigured track, as changes made in Summer 2021 made for a more flowing track, particularly at the keyhole of Turn 5, which used to have an additional left-right bend before drivers traversed the hairpin to the back straight , the longest and fastest section of the route. Other changes over the last year have included removing additional tricky kinks between turns 10-14 to make this section more or less one corner with a small short slide connecting the corners.

These small changes made for an interesting race in 2021, with drivers finding a few more spots to attempt overtakes and as the cars should now be able to drive closer together due to the different aero package introduced in 2022 the Yas Marina Circuit make for a pretty good event.

In terms of tyres, expect Pirelli to bring a similar compound to the previous races at Interlagos and Mexico City, although there were enough differences between these tires that it was obvious that the medium-sized tire brought to Mexico City Mixture was not as strong as the media used in Interlagos. With Yas not having a particularly rough surface and the track having low drag, the decision to bring the three softest compounds in the Pirelli range should be an easy one for teams in terms of familiarity with tire degradation.

This race can be won with a two-stop strategy, but last year Verstappen made a third stop during a safety car period only to slip on the soft compound tires on his way to victory.
