Louis van Gaal, Netherlands

“Ecuador is an even tougher opponent than Senegal. They don’t score many goals, but they don’t concede many either.

“Cody Gakpo is a player with a lot of talent, but he’s still young and has room for improvement. It is possible that he will become the star of the World Cup. He can become a star.”

Gustavo Alfaro, Ecuador

“To be successful, you have to sacrifice a lot. But we have nothing to lose against the Netherlands. You are a team that, in addition to its ability to work in a team, also has the individual quality to solve problems.”

PREVIEW (via Reuters)

Ecuador or the Netherlands will take a big step towards the second round of the World Cup if they can both force a victory in Friday’s Group A clash at the Khalifa International Stadium after both sides won their opening games in Qatar.

But while Ecuador have their sights set on reaching the round of 16, as they did in Germany in 2006, the Dutch will be hoping for a significantly improved performance to back up coach Louis van Gaal’s claim that they can go ahead and win the World Cup.

The Netherlands were far from their best as they defeated African champions Senegal 2-0 in their first group game on Monday.

PREDICTED XI

Netherlands: Noppert, De Ligt, Van Dijk, Ake, Dumfries, Berghuis, De Jong, Blind, Gakpo, Bergwijn, Depay

Ecuador: Galindez, Estupinan, Hincapie, Torres, Preciado, Plata, Mendez, Caicedo, Sarmiento, Valencia, Ibarra

Van Gaal was delighted with the three points and justifying his surprise decision to give goalkeeper Andries Noppert an international debut, but, like captain Virgil van Dijk, was critical of the manner of the win.

“We won, but we also know that we can and must do better,” said the skipper.

“Forward, we sometimes tried to force things and we exposed ourselves to Senegal’s counterattacks too often. It’s an area where we need to improve because it’s an art that our next opponents, Ecuador, are very good at.

“But I’m optimistic because I feel we’re going to get better,” added Van Dijk.

Ecuador are confident Enner Valencia, who scored both goals in Sunday’s 2-0 win over hosts Qatar, will be fit despite some concerns over a sprained knee.

Goalkeeper Hernan Galindez said Saudi Arabia’s shock win over Argentina on Tuesday proved that no team is unbeatable.

“I think Argentina’s defeat won’t be the last surprise of this World Cup,” he added.

“Despite the Netherlands’ victory, they were balanced against Senegal. There are certainly ways to harm the Netherlands.

“It’s going to be a tough game but I expect the Netherlands to treat us with respect,” added the 35-year-old.

The Dutch are likely to start Memphis Depay after he came on from the bench for his first game after suffering a hamstring injury against Senegal after two months.
