If you’re frustrated by the direction Twitter has taken since then Elon Musk has taken over, maybe it’s time to join them beehive.
Chief Twit’s messy decision-making has created a succession crisis in the social media world. Twitter-like apps are trying to recruit users frustrated by the Musk regime, and among these alternatives, Hive has garnered the most attention.
The three-year-old platform now has more than a million downloads worldwide. According to the company’s own tweets, it “achieved 250,000 downloads overnight.” Not bad for an app that only had about 500,000 installs before this Twitter drama began.

At the time of this writing, Hive was the fourth most downloaded free app on the App Store, according to Sensor Tower and Data.ai. Hive is shooting up the charts thanks to its popularity abroad. TechCrunchciting data from Sensor Tower, found that 86% of Hive installs were from outside the US
Success was a long time coming for the Romanian founder of Hive, who goes by the nickname Kassandra Pop. “I felt exhilarated yet calm because I had prepared for this moment for a long time. I always knew if I kept working on it, eventually people would like the app and it would get attention,” she said Teen Vogue. “I realized the app wasn’t bad, it just needed some attention.”
Musk’s erratic leadership — which has led to widespread firings, wild promises, and the reinstatement of a certain ex-president — has given emerging platforms a boost in visibility. At first, many Twitter expats flocked to Mastodon, but this server-based app has been criticized for being confusing and just plain boring.
Hive, on the other hand, is easy to use and pulls together popular features from previous and current social hubs. The Twitter-style feeds are presented in chronological order, allowing users to return to an experience abandoned by other platforms. For a touch of nostalgia, Hive imported a famous feature from Myspace: the ability to choose a song as your profile’s soundtrack. If you prefer a Reddit-style experience, Hive feeds can be broken down into specific categories.
There is still work to be done for Hive before it can handle scaling at the Twitter level. forbes pointed out that multiple users can claim the same handle, which could eventually lead to the chaos that’s currently rampant on Twitter.
But there’s a lot to like about Hive. Its respect for beloved social features could take it well past its latest milestone, especially if Twitter continues to falter.
