- How to unlock Deneb’s Wicce class
We know that things will have changed in the coming years. But as we write this guide, learn how to recruit Deneb (and get the Wicce class) in Tactical Ogre: Reborn, we’re in a battle of our own – widespread misinformation. As you can see, the PSP version of Tactics Ogre had different requirements.
These requirements are burned into the minds of the masses. And understandably so. But we’re here to share with you what few fans have spotted as of this writing. There’s a newer, less boring way to get Wicce Deneb to join Denam’s cause. How to do it.
How to recruit Deneb
You’ll be forgiven if you think this is the only section of the guide that matters, but actually we have a separate section for the Wicce class, which is a trickier affair. First, let’s go over how to get Deneb, with or without Wicce.
In Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, the PSP remake of the 1995 game that many of us played, recruiting Deneb meant doing what we’re about to cover… but more of the same. You used to have to get three times as many of each of these creatures, which slowed things down considerably. In fact, creator Yasumi Matsuno himself stated that Tactics Ogre: Reborn rebalanced this for a good reason.
When visiting stores, there is an “Auction” menu. It’s entirely possible to beat Tactics Ogre’s sprawling storyline without ever touching it. Here you auction off monsters and thus expand the shop’s inventory of various goods. A nifty arrangement, if hardly mandatory (not to mention barely explained).
Your goal is to expand the store’s inventory each elemental orb (those equippable items that deal elemental damage in the area of effect in combat). For the record, it doesn’t matter if you do this in the regular shop or in Deneb’s special shop, so you can start doing this long before her shop shows up in Chapter 4.
Then how do you get those orbs for the shop expansion? By auctioning dragon and a handful of potential replacements. This is consistent with the earlier version of Tactics Ogre; instead of needing three However, you only need each category one. So if you’ve read otherwise in older guidebooks, don’t waste your time!
|monster||Unlocked Orb At Shops|
|Flame Dragon or Cyclops||Inferno Orb|
|frost dragon||Black Ice Ball|
|lightning dragon||storm ball|
|flood dragon or octopus||cataract ball|
|earth dragon||dust ball|
|cloud dragon||Gale Sphere|
|Arc Dragon||Radiant Orb|
|dark dragon||Gloomy Orb|
|Hydra or empty hydra||empty sphere|
You can find most if not all of them in the Phorampa Wildwood. Only Flame Dragon, Frost Dragon, Thunder Dragon, and Earth Dragon appear in the earlier tiers, but you can access more tiers in each chapter. We have a guide on how to do this.
After auctioning off one of the above creatures, your goal is to buy at least one of each orb. Exiting Deneb’s shop afterward triggers a cutscene that causes her to join. Don’t do this just yet unless you want to unlock her Wicce class, which is significantly more powerful than her standard witch class!
How to unlock Deneb’s Wicce class
Previously this next part was about collecting 30(!) of an item called Glass Pumpkins. Things are simpler now, but radically different. Instead of this, You must read Mysterious Blast on Exeter in the Talk section of the Warren Report. This shows up fairly early in chapter four.
Don’t recruit Deneb just yet. Complete the battles on the way to Palace of the Dead. On the third floorsearch that northwest for a fairly obvious portal door. After the battle, a brand new late-game mechanic is introduced: Upgrade relics in shops. (Big props to hard-working and hard-working Freshman Week players like MerRyan for confirming things we had to double-verify!)
Unsure what a relic is? Relics are weapons with a pink background. They’re special in that these weapons can be combined to forge newer versions, and they’re exclusive to Tactics Ogre: Reborn. If you’ve ever played an MMO like Final Fantasy 14, think of them as some sort of epic loot. You can snag them from recruited enemies throughout the game, mostly in Chapter Four. You will of course find some through optional dungeons as well.
What’s next? You must use the Upgrade Relic menu in a shop three times before purchasing one of each orb. Remember not to grab everyone Orb before, or Deneb will join as a normal witch! Only after you have upgraded three relics should you do so. With three upgraded relics and each orb purchased, exit Deneb’s shop and an event will occur leading to a battle at Vasque!
The main enemy here isn’t that tough, although the horde of them can make things tiring. Keep Deneb alive at any cost, otherwise the whole side quest was for nothing. Once the scratching is behind you, and assuming you’ve done it both Sharing our guide, Deneb joins Denam’s army with her special Wicce class, which boasts some serious magical firepower. You may never see other mage classes like this again…
