So many narratives emerge whenever the US and England meet, and it will be no different.

All is not lost after the 1-1 draw against Wales in the World Cup opener. Still, it was a disappointing result after dominating the first half and USA need at least a point against England to go into their final group game against Iran and have a good chance of reaching the last 16.

As for England, Gareth Southgate’s side dominated the 6-2 win over Iran to open the Group B season and they are looking to secure their place in the last 16 as soon as possible. Their defenses looked a bit shaky against Iran, so let’s see if the USMNT can uncover any weaknesses.

Major storylines, players to watch closely

Berhalter is under pressure to start the likes of Brenden Aaronson and Gio Reyna (who didn’t feature at all against Wales despite being 100 per cent fit) as the USMNT need to do more with winning the ball high up on the pitch. They did that again and again against Wales and should have been a couple of goals up before the Welsh made a tactical change that Berhalter didn’t react to well. Getting Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah to come together in the final third will be crucial and USA will need to hold the ball better than they did against Wales if they are to get anything out of this game. However, USA defeated England at the 1950 World Cup in one of the biggest shocks in history, and they drew 1-1 in 2010, the last time they met at that tournament.

The Three Lions were irresistible in attack against Iran and Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were such a good match. However, there are concerns about an injury surrounding Kane as he had a scan on an ankle prior to this clash. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice excelled in central midfield but England looked a bit shaky at center back in the second half. The fact that England were able to get Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford off the bench in attack is a testament to the strength of their squad.
