Newly famous international sweethearts Canada will try again to make a string of firsts when they meet Croatia in their second game at the 2022 World Cup on Sunday.

Canada outshone many of the tournament’s heavyweights in the first round of group matches, eventually falling just short of their first World Championship point and, if things had gone a little differently, their first win.

Group F is intriguing as favorites Belgium struggle in the opener and Croatia and Morocco are both unconvincing. As things stand, it’s wide open to anyone (and everyone).

Major storylines, players to watch closely

On the one hand, Canada were nothing short of brilliant when they returned on Wednesday after 36 years of preparation for the World Cup. On the other hand, they lost 1-0 to Belgium and are the only team in Group F so far without a point. The Canucks won praise (and new fans) for showing no fear of playing the number one. 2 in the world and were clearly the better team that day, said Belgium coach Roberto Martinez after the game. Alphonso Davies failed to save Thibaut Courtois from the penalty spot, the game was still 0-0 and Canada were looking for their first-ever World Cup goal (yes, that too). Sunday maybe.

As for Croatia, the opening draw against Morocco raised a few red flags for a nation that advanced to the World Cup final just four (and a half) years ago. With five out of eleven starters aged 30 or older, Croatia has very little range and mobility and nowhere on the explosiveness side. Despite Croatia having almost 65 percent possession in the game against Morocco, Croatia only managed five shots in 90 minutes (two on target) and a paltry 0.52 xG. If things don’t turn around on Sunday, it will be the end of an iconic era that has sadly lasted a cycle too long.
