LIVE BEL 0-0 CAN, Live streaming info Belgium vs Canada, FIFA World Cup: Courtois saves, Qatar 2022 updates

Many Canadian soccer fans have waited their entire lives for this moment.

Canada’s soccer team, long behind ice hockey in their home country, is back at the World Cup for the first time since 1986 and faces a formidable opponent on Wednesday: Belgium, runners-up in the 2018 semi-finals.

“I’ve already seen it generate a lot of interest from younger players, 7-, 8-year-olds, some in my family, teammates, kids,” Canada captain Atiba Hutchinson said on Tuesday. “Just the interest it has brought to our country is really something special to see. I’ve been in the national team for a very long time and I’ve never seen them reach this level.”

Hutchinson, 39, is the only player in Canada’s squad alive at the time of the nation’s last World Cup game. Canada lost to France, Hungary and the Soviet Union three times in a row, remaining goalless with a squad that included Bob Lenarduzzi, Tino Lettieri and Branko Segota.

“We want to put Canada on the map,” Hutchinson said.

His earliest footballing memories are of the 1994 World Cup in the United States, when he was 11 and firing for Brazil, eventual world champions.

“I was in that one,” Hutchinson said. “The fans in the stadium, around the stadium, it was something special to see and that got me very interested and made me feel like maybe playing at a World Cup one day.”

These Canadians are being led by a new generation, led by Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Cyle Larin. They finished first in CONCACAF qualifying, a turnaround orchestrated by coach John Herdman. He coached the Canadian women to bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, then switched to the men in 2018.

“I think it’s a dream come true for me, the players, the country,” Herdman said. “We have to enjoy this process, enjoy the experience, be happy to know that there are people at home surrounding the TVs, filling bars and restaurants. … We pinch ourselves. It’s just real now. It’s getting more real by the hour.”

Herdman said Davies is fully fit and on track to start after recovering from a strained right hamstring that has sidelined him since November 5.

“Canada is now in a position where we can field our strongest team,” Herdman said. “These are exciting times for us. Now the dark clouds have cleared.”

Part of a Group F that includes Croatia and Morocco, Belgium is in its seventh year under coach Roberto Martinez. The Red Devils finished third at the 2018 World Cup, losing to Italy in the quarter-finals of last year’s European Championship.

His core could be at the peak or just above, with Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard both 31, Romelu Lukaku 29 and Youri Tielemans at 25 part of the next age group.

Lukaku will not play on Wednesday due to a left thigh injury.

Belgium suffered a 2-1 friendly defeat against Egypt last week.

“Probably what woke us up was what we needed,” Martinez said. “I was concerned how we would react to a three or four day prep before you can play the first game, which is usually four, five, six weeks to prepare for a competition and probably this loss has that process accelerated. ”

He expressed his admiration for Canada.

“They look like a team. They never look like a group of players coming together to represent the national team,” Martinez said. “They look like a team with very clear concepts, solid, very dynamic, competitive. A team that knows its strengths.”

Janny Sikazwe from Zambia will referee the game. During an Africa Cup of Nations match in January, he blew his whistle to end the game after 85 minutes, then restarted it and ended it after 89 minutes and 47 seconds when about three minutes of stoppage time had been expected.
