Mexico Soccer Coaches: FIFA World Cup 2022: Who is Mexico’s Coach?

After the 2018 World Cup, where El Tri failed to reach the quarter-finals for the seventh straight year, the Mexican national team let Juan Carlos Osorio’s contract expire and began looking for a new coach.

Mexico’s exploration took her north to the United States. It had taken her to Georgia, where the Atlanta United Football Club stormed to the top of the all-important League Soccer and set an attendance record for just one straight year. Gerardo Martino was the driving force behind the Five Stripes’ success this season, which led to Atlanta’s home win of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup. Shortly after Atlanta won the championship, pro football’s worst-kept secret became a reality: Martino would become the next coach of the Mexico national team.

2022 is not Martino’s first World Cup as a coach. In 2010, he led an inexperienced Paraguayan squad to the quarter-finals, the country’s most outstanding performance on the sport’s most important stage. Paraguay have not qualified for a World Cup since Martino left his childhood club, Argentina’s Newell’s Old Boys, in 2011.

Martino enjoyed two stellar seasons at Newell’s as the team surpassed and he capitalized on that success to become FC Barcelona head coach in 2013. Barcelona went unbeaten in their first 20 games under Martino, but the team fell in the Champions League and failed to win the league. He resigned after just one season.

Martino was re-elected coach of the Argentina national team in 2014. Argentina finished second in the Copa America twice during his tenure.
