Boulaye Dia made the best of a defensive error to put Senegal ahead just before half-time, then Famara Diedhiou headed home a second just after half-time.

Qatar improved in the second half when Mohammed Muntari scored Qatar’s first-ever World Cup goal, but Ahmadou Bamba Dieng struck late to add some sparkle to Senegal’s goal.

With the win, Senegal set up a tasty final Group A game against Ecuador as they have a chance to reach the last 16 while Qatar sit on the brink of elimination. If the Netherlands win against Ecuador in the second group game or draw, Qatar is eliminated.

Too little too late for the hosts but Senegal overwhelmed

Hosts Qatar basically left the tournament without ever actually showing up. They gave their all in the second half and scored a historic goal and had great chances but Edouard Mendy denied them. Why haven’t they done that more often in the last two games? Qatar’s players froze and didn’t seem to understand what was being asked of them, which is a big surprise considering how long this coach has been with the team.

However, Senegal have not been great and of course they are not expected to be at their best without their talisman Sadio Mane. Ahead of the final game of the group stage against Ecuador, which is likely to decide which side will progress alongside the Netherlands, Senegal coach Aliou Cisse will want a lot more from his side. They were sloppy in possession and although they scored three goals against Qatar, one came from a mistake and the other from a set piece. The African champions need to improve if they want to break out of the group and do something beyond that.

Major storylines, players to watch closely

Gold Cup top scorer Almoez Ali almost scored for Qatar against Ecuador, so the tournament’s hosts know they can create chances. Could a quick finish remind Qatar of better days after they had won four straight friendlies against Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Albania since October?

Senegal were keen on Ismaila Sarr and the speedy winger did not disappoint when she switched to Boulaye Dia as a prolific but ultimately goalless striker against the Netherlands. Cheikhou Kouyate is injured while four Premier League stars start for Senegal in Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Nampalys Mendy and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
