Pokémon GO’s final season, The Season of Light, features a special research quest in the form of “A Cosmic Companion”. This research starts with earning you a Cosmog Pokémon and evolves into a chance to evolve it into one of two Generation VII Legendaries, Solgaleo or Lunala.

Unlike a normal evolution, Cosmoem has the ability to evolve into one of these legends, so knowing the circumstances under which the evolution must take place is important if there’s a specific one you’re looking for.

We’ve put together the guide below to educate you on the differences in evolution tactics and what you need to do to ensure your Cosmoem evolves into the legendary you need.

Pokémon GO – How to evolve Cosmoem into Solgaleo and Lunala

Evolving Cosmoem into one of its two forms is a bit trickier than is usually the case with Pokémon evolutions. With both outcomes, it’s important to pay close attention to the time you perform the evolution, with daylight hours playing a major role in whether you loot a Solgaleo or Lunala.

Both of these evolution outcomes require you to have collected a certain amount of Cosmog Candy before anything can take place. We have therefore first outlined how you can obtain these, before going into the details of how Cosmoem evolves into one of its legendary states.

How to get Cosmog Candy

Cosmog Candy can be pretty hard to come by and building enough of it is the biggest challenge in Legendary Evolution. Currently, the candy can be found in three different ways: completing research quests, getting lucky with a rare candy, or going with Cosmog/Cosmoem as your sidekick (thanks Eurogamer).

The first of these approaches will net you the largest amount of Cosmog Candy at once. It can be obtained by completing Step 8 of the Season of Light special research quest, A Cosmic Companion, which requires you to catch any three Pokémon. As a reward for completing it, you will receive 50 Cosmog Candies, as well as 3000 XP and 1500 Stardust.

Rare Candy is another approach and useful in a situation like this where Cosmog Candy is relatively hard to come by. Presenting the Pokemon with a rare candy turns it into the required product, but don’t expect these to be readily available – they’re called “rare” for a reason!

The final approach is to assign Cosmog/Cosmoem as your buddy, where you earn candies by walking with them. Again, this is a slow approach to getting the item, but every little bit helps.

Solgaleo

To evolve Cosmoem into Solgaleo, you need 100 Cosmog candies and you need to do the evolution during the day.

Daylight hours in Pokémon GO depend on your local time zone and are reflected on the main map, which you can see on the game’s home screen. If the sun is just rising where you are, the Pokémon GO map will turn green and the Cosmoem evolution icon will have a small silhouette of Solgaleo to confirm this.

It’s worth considering that you can only do this development once for now. This means you should only evolve Cosmoem during the day if you want to get a Solgaleo out of it. If you don’t, you won’t be able to evolve the Cosmic Pokemon into Lunala.

Lunala

Evolving Cosmoem into Lunala works similarly to evolving Solgaleo, but has the opposite effect. The evolution requires 100 Cosmog candies and must take place at night.

The daylight hour display on the Pokémon GO map is a good sign of what Legendaries your evolution will produce. In the case of Lunala, you want the map to be in a darkened state that reflects the nighttime setting of your local time. Cosmoem’s evolution button will contain a silhouette of Lunala during this period as confirmation.

Similar to Solgaleo, Cosmoem can only be evolved once, regardless of how many Cosmog Candy you have. If you want to make sure you get a Lunala from the Evolution, it’s a good idea to check if the game has you during the night hours, as that’s the only time the Legendary is available.
