Spain stars Alvaro Morata and Daniel Carvajal were eliminated from the starting XI against Costa Rica after the hotel’s air conditioning was blamed for the cold at the 2022 World Cup

There has been a lot of talk about air conditioning when looking at how countries are dealing with the heat in Qatar at the 2022 World Cup.

However, the teams are now in real trouble as two Spanish players will miss the opening game against Costa Rica because of the machines in their hotel.

When Luis Enrique named his team on Wednesday afternoon, fans were surprised to see Morata and Carvajal both on the bench.

And talkSPORT’s commentator for the game, Nigel Adderley, has revealed why they aren’t in the starting XI.

He said: “They missed a couple of players, Morata and Carvajal, who are suffering from colds due to the air conditioning in their hotel.

“Neither of them made it into the starting XI.”

Instead, Chelsea’s C├ęsar Azpilicueta has come on at right-back, while Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio is up front as a false nine.

The 2010 world champion is also absent from the tournament after the Valencia left-back suffered a sprained ankle in training and was replaced by Barca youngster Alejandro Balde.

Spain hope to reclaim their place at the top of world football in Qatar.

An incredible win in 2010 was followed by a disappointing elimination to hosts Russia in 2018 and a group stage failure in 2014.
