Boston College Blog: BC break
Rivalry: 33-22, Syracuse
Current streak: 1, Syracuse
First date: One of the oldest soccer rivalries in the Northeast began in early 1924. Boston College traveled to Archbold Stadium and was rewarded with zero points against the Orange. Syracuse clinched a 10-0 win and the teams would not play for another 20 years. The annual game between programs began in 1971.
Last meeting: Syracuse teamed up in the second half, realizing that running the ball could be a good idea. Sean Tucker rushed for 207 yards while Garret Shrader gained 120 yards as the Orange stomped on Boston College in the second half of last year’s competition, winning 21-6
head coach: Syracuse – Dino Babers (seventh year, 35-48) | Boston College – Jeff Hafley (third year, 15-19)
Trainer Bio: Hafley played college football near Syracuse, having been a wide receiver for Siena in the capital area. He earned a Masters from Albany and was a defensive assistant and secondary coach for the Great Danes from 2002-05. Hafley then made stints at Pittsburgh and Rutgers before the NFL called. In 2012, he took a job as an assistant secondary coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and became an assistant coach the following season. Hafley also held secondary coaching roles with the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers before Ohio State named him Ohio State co-defensive coordinator in 2019. An impressive defensive season with the Buckeyes convinced the Eagles to give Hafley his first head coaching appearance.
Last year: Boston College used a weak off-conference schedule and an overtime win over Missouri to sneak into a bowl game with two ACC wins over Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. The Eagles were scheduled to play East Carolina in the Military Bowl, but COVID issues in BC’s program forced the game to be canceled.
Last game: If the 37 points allowed didn’t end BC in the first half, the snow in South Bend in the second half certainly did. The Eagles mustered just 173 yards of offense on Notre Dame’s 437 as the Fighting Irish drove to a 44-0 win.
“Fear me, I have slain hundreds of Time Lords”: Zay Flowers is this year’s recipient of the “Wait, you’re still in college?” award. forgive. He is 33 yards from 1,000 receiving yards and has 10 touchdowns this season, earning him a Bilentnikoff Award semifinalist spot.
If Syracuse wins: Phew, thank god for that. See you all in the Bronx.
If Syracuse loses: Uhh… hopefully we’ll be in the Bronx next?
fun fact: This is the first time the Orange have been to Chestnut Hill since 2018, where Eric Dungey led Syracuse to a 42-21 win.
