Shops and businesses across the United States will close on Thursday, when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving – but figuring out what will stay open can be confusing. Many stores that were once open on Thanksgiving have changed policies since the pandemic, closing for the day before Black Friday sales.
Here are the shops and institutions that are open and closed on Turkey Day.
Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Kohl’s will all be shut down, a policy that began in 2020 and continues. The onset of the pandemic prompted these chains to close their doors on Thanksgiving to limit crowds and extend the holiday shopping season.
“That’s part of the past. We’re closed again on Thanksgiving,” Walmart (WMT) US CEO John Furner said in October interview on NBC.
Target (TGT) announced last year that its stores would close on Thanksgiving going forward.
“What started as a temporary measure due to the pandemic is now our new standard,” Target CEO Brian Cornell said last year. “The opening hours of Thanksgiving stores is one thing we will not return to when the pandemic finally subsides.”
Macy’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Bed Bath & Beyond locations will also close for the day. Costco (COST), Home Depot (HD), Nordstrom (JWN), Publix, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, and others have been closed on Thanksgiving for many years.
Last-minute grocery shopping can be found at ACME, Albertsons, Fairway, Giant, Ralphs, Safeway, ShopRite, Sprouts Farmers Market, Wegmans, and Whole Foods, among others, although hours vary by location. Big Lots, Dollar General and Family Dollar will also have some hours of operation.
As for retail pharmacies on Thanksgiving, CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid are open at different times.
Check with local businesses to see if they are closed for the holiday.
Federal offices, government buildings and post offices will remain closed on Thursday. State and local courts and Department of Motor Vehicle offices will also remain closed.
Since Thanksgiving is a holiday, most banks are closed. Online banking and ATMs are still available. The stock exchange is also closed.
USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL are all closed.
