What is open in Gaithersburg for Thanksgiving 2022, closed

GERMANTOWN, MD – Various closures and schedule changes are in effect for the Thanksgiving holiday in Gaithersburg. Also, check out the modified subway and bus service below.

Government offices, schools and other services will be closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 24 and Black Friday, November 25. Services such as transit and garbage collection are open with modified schedules.

On Thanksgiving Day, turkey trots are held throughout the DC area. Bethesda is hosting the 40th Annual Turkey Chase Charity Race in-person this year, with the 10K starting at 8:30 am and the 2-mile fun run/walk starting at 9 am

The starting line for the 10K is at the corner of Old Georgetown Road and Spruce Tree Ave. at Bethesda. Package pickup is at the YMCA Bethesda Chevy Chase at 9401 Old Georgetown Road in Silver Spring.

Below are the openings and closings you should know for Thanksgiving Day in Gaithersburg and the county:

Office buildings in Montgomery County: Closed

State offices and courts: Closed.

State Motor Vehicle Administrations and Vehicle Emission Testing Program Stations: Closed.

Libraries: Closed.

Alcoholic Beverage Services: All ABS stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Shops will be open on Wednesday 23 November from 10am to 9pm.

County-Operated COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing Clinics: Closed.

Permission Services Department: All offices, including the customer service lobby, are closed.

Montgomery County 311: Will not be operational.

Ride on: Operates on a “Sunday” timetable. All timetables can be viewed under Routes and timetables.

Ride On extRa and Ride On Flex: Will not be operational.

Flash: Operates on a Sunday timetable (orange line only).

MARC train and local bus: No service on Thanksgiving Day. On Friday, November 25, the Saturday roster will operate on the Penn Line; No service on the Camden or Brunswick Lines.

TRiPS commuter store in Silver Spring: Closed.

Travel: Mobile Commuter Store: Closed.

Subway Rail: Trains operate on a Sunday timetable on Thanksgiving Day, with no scheduled track work. The system opens at 7am and closes at midnight. Off-peak rates apply all day, and parking at Metro-operated facilities is free. On Friday 25 November, rail services will operate on a regular weekday timetable with normal fares and parking fees.

metro bus: Operates on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day. Customers should check bus timetables for details. A regular weekday schedule with normal fares will operate on Friday 25th November.

Subway access: The paratransit service operates at the same times as Metrorail and Metrobus. Subscription rides will be canceled on Thanksgiving Day unless the MetroAccess customer specifically wishes to travel on that holiday.

Parking in public parking garages, parking lots, curbs: Free on Thanksgiving. Normal parking fees and enforcement will apply from Friday 25th November.

Garbage and recycling provided by the county: No collections will be made on Thursday, November 24th. Collections normally scheduled for Thursday 24th November and Friday 25th November will be moved to a day later.

Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center: Closed.

Community Recreation and Senior Centers: Closed Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th November.

Water Sports Centers: Closed.

Montgomery County Parks

Montgomery Parks programs and hours of operation will vary at some locations for the Thanksgiving holiday of November 25-27.

Open the Parkways schedule

The Open Parkways schedule begins Wednesday November 23 with portions of Sligo Creek Parkway and Beach Drive open to pedestrians and cyclists.

From Wednesday 23/11 at 09:00 to Monday 28/11 at 07:00 open to pedestrians and cyclists (closed to motor vehicles).

  • Sligo Creek Avenue
  • From Old Carroll Avenue to Piney Branch Road (1.8 km)
  • Forest Glen Road to University Boulevard West (1.5 miles)
  • Beach Drive from Connecticut Avenue to Knowles Avenue (2.7 miles)

Little Falls Parkway is now a linear pilot park with two of the four lanes along Little Falls Parkway between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue open daily for recreational use.

Fun activities available during the bank holiday weekend include:

  • Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens (21-24 Nov closed)
  • Autumn bird watching at Black Hill
  • Parks, trails, gardens, playgrounds, dog parks, skate parks, outdoor exercise stations, and outdoor tennis/pickleball and basketball courts* are open daily from sunrise to sunset. (*Selected outdoor courts can be rented.)
  • The in-line hockey rink at Ridge Road Recreational Park and the street hockey/futsal rink at Dewey Local Park may be permitted or are subject to availability if not reserved.
  • Campfire rings are available for rent at several locations.
  • Small Bennett campsite
  • Ice skate at Cabin John Ice Rink or Wheaton Ice Arena
  • Brookside Gardens Grounds open daily sunrise to sunset, Visitor Center open daily 9am to 4pm, Gift Shop open daily 10am to 3:30pm, Conservatory open daily 10am to 4pm (24th December) . and 25 November closed)
  • Josiah Henson Museum and Park, Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m
