Americans celebrate Thanksgiving as a holiday full of food, family, and parades.
Because Thanksgiving always falls on a Thursday, many businesses remain closed on Fridays so workers can enjoy a four-day weekend. Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Thanksgiving and Black Friday across the Lehigh Valley:
What began in 2020 with many stores bucking the trend of opening late at Thanksgiving due to the coronavirus pandemic continued into 2021. For most major retailers, this practice will continue into 2022.
Large closed retailers include Boscov’s, Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kohl’s, JC Penney, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Macy’s.
The area’s major shopping destinations are also closed, including Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall Township; Palmer Park Shopping Center in Palmer Township; and The Promenade Shops in the Saucon Valley in Upper Saucon Township.
However, some stores assume they are open on Thanksgiving. These include Big Lots, CVS, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Rite Aid, depending on each company’s website, CountryLiving, GoodHouseKeeping and RetailMeNot.
On Black Friday, which officially takes place on Friday November 25th, all shops are expected to remain open – many with extended opening hours.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects November and December holiday sales to grow between 6% and 8% compared to 2021, for total sales of about $943 billion and $960 billion, respectively. Last year’s holiday sales rose 13.5% from 2020, totaling about $889 billion, according to NRF, breaking previous records.
For early risers who want to avoid waiting hours just to gain entry to a store, chains like Kohls and Best Buy open at 5am; Walmart at 6 a.m.; and Target at 7:00 a.m. Lehigh Valley Mall opens at 6:00 am Friday and Palmer Park Mall opens at 7:00 am Friday (Boscov’s opens at 6:00 am in Palmer Park).
The Promenade Shops open at 9am on Black Friday, however some shops and restaurants may have earlier opening hours.
Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, which means all state and federal agencies are closed.
All county and township offices in Northampton, Lehigh and Warren Boroughs are also closed on Thursday 24th November. Northampton County will reopen its offices for normal business hours on Friday, November 25; Lehigh County offices will remain closed Friday, November 25 and open Monday, November 28; and The Warren County offices will also be closed on Friday, November 25th and will reopen on Monday, November 28th.
Most council offices in the Lehigh Valley and north-west Jersey are also closed on Friday. including Phillipsburg and the cities Easton, Bethlehem and Allentown. Also closed on Friday are Palmer Township and Forks Township and Wilson Borough, Reopening Monday 28th November.
The New York Stock Exchange is closed on Thursday, November 24 and open on Friday, November 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., said Peter Asch, the exchange’s corporate communications and archivist. Nasdaq is also closed on Thursday, November 24, reopening from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 25, according to its website.
Most banks are closed on Thursdays, inclusive Fulton Bank, Santander, banks of america, TD Bank and Wells Fargo. Online banking and ATMs will remain open, although transactions such as wire transfers may not appear until Friday November 25th.
Most supermarkets in the Lehigh Valley are open, such as Weis Markets, Giant Food Stores, and Wegmans, but have reduced hours. However, ShopRite, 4701 Freemansburg Ave., in Bethlehem Township, will be closed on Thursday, November 24 and will reopen on Friday, November 25 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Fine Wine & Good Spirits will close its Pennsylvania stores on Thursday, November 24th. On Friday, November 25, some Pennsylvania stores will open and close with extended holidays, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board says. New Jersey’s liquor stores are privately owned and are also likely to close, depending on the owner.
In New Jersey, the four branches of the Warren County Library system – the Catherine Dickson Hofman in Blairstown; Southwest branch in Stewartsville; headquarters in Belvidere; and Northeast Branch in Independence Township – closes at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23 and remains closed through Monday, November 28.
The Phillipsburg Free Public Library will be closed Wednesday, November 23 through Friday, November 25 and will reopen on Monday, November 28. The Hackettstown Free Public Library closes at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 23 through Friday, November 25 and reopens on Saturday, Nov. 26. The WH Walters Free Public Library in Alpha will be closed Thursday, November 24th through Saturday, November 26th and will reopen on Monday, November 28th.
In Pennsylvania, the Easton Area Public Library and its Palmer branch in Palmer Township will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 23 through Thursday, November 24 and will reopen on Friday, November 25. The Hellertown Area Library is closed Thursday, November 24 through Friday, November 25, reopening Saturday, November 26 at 9am.
The Bethlehem Library Main Branch and Southside Branch will close at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 23 through Friday, November 25 and will reopen on Saturday, November 26. The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity closes at 5pm on Wednesday. 23 November to Saturday 26 November, reopening on Monday 28 November.
Some restaurants and larger chains will remain open on Thanksgiving, but with reduced hours. Choose Starbucks Sites belong to the open chains. Several mom and pop and smaller chains are closed. It is best to call ahead to inquire about opening hours.
No LANtaBus or LANtaVan connections will be offered on Thursday, November 24th. All connections will resume on Friday 25th November at a normal operating schedule.
Trans-Bridge will operate these routes on Thursday, November 24: Allentown/Clinton/New York east to New York; Allentown/Clinton/New York west of New York; Service Doylestown/Flemington/New York West of New York; east to Newark Airport; from Newark West Airport; and Wind Creek Bethlehem Casino. There will be no eastbound service from Doylestown/Flemington/New York to New York; Wall Street Service; or Phillipsburg service.
TransBridge will operate these routes on Friday, November 25: Allentown/Clinton/New York east to New York; Allentown/Clinton/New York west of New York; Doylestown/Flemington/New York east to New York; Doylestown/Flemington/New York West; Wind Creek Bethlehem Casino; and Wall Street Service.

All New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission offices will be closed Thursday, November 24th and will reopen on Friday, November 25th. However, the NJMVC.gov website will be available for a variety of motor vehicle services. Almost all face-to-face services at the Commission’s agencies require an appointment to be made online.
All of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s driver’s license and photo centers, including the full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed on Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25, and will reopen to normal on Saturday, November 26 business hours Customers can still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services here, including all forms, publications and driver training manuals. There are no additional fees for using online services.
Most schools in the Lehigh Valley will be closed on Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th. Some school districts will remain closed on Monday, November 28, although the start of white-tailed deer gun season is now the preceding Saturday.
US Post Offices will be closed on Thursday 24th November but will be open on Friday 25th November. There is no mail delivery on Thursday.
Most community centers will be closed on Thursday 24th November but many will reopen on Friday 25th November. Many communities hold Christmas tree lighting ceremonies either on the Friday after Thanksgiving or on the following weekends.
The Hanover Township Community Center will host its Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, December 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Forks Township will host its holiday festival and annual tree lighting in the amphitheater on Sunday, December 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., said Rachel Sulzbach, director of parks and recreation.
Palmer Township will host its Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, December 10 from 6:15-8:00 p.m Charles Chrin Community Center. Nazareth will host its annual tree lighting ceremony on Friday, December 9th at 7:00pm in the district’s central square.
Most gas stations and some convenience stores remain open on Thanksgiving.
