England prepare for their second World Cup group game against the USA on Friday night.

Gareth Southgate’s men go into the game knowing that three points will be enough to secure their place in the last 16.

But the English players of 2022 must do what their predecessors have failed to do at a World Cup – beat the Americans.

The USA beat England 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil and 60 years later they held Fabio Capello’s side to a 1-1 draw in South Africa after a howl from Rob Green.

Here’s all the facts on England’s Group B opponents, with a look at their manager, key players and FIFA World Ranking.

Who is the USA manager?

The Americans are managed by Gregg Berhalter, who has been responsible for the national team since December 2018.

Berhalter led the side to the CONCACAF Gold Cup title with a 1-0 win against Mexico in the final last November.

The 49-year-old briefly played for Crystal Palace between 2001 and 2022 with 19 appearances for the south Londoners.

The former defender also made 44 appearances for USA and was part of the squad that attended the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

Who are their main actors?

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic has become the figurehead of men’s American football, the 24-year-old scoring 21 goals in 52 caps.

19-year-old Giovanni Reyna was one of the last contenders for the 2022 Golden Boy Award, having shone for Borussia Dortmund in recent seasons.

Former Arsenal academy player Yunus Musah has blossomed after joining Valencia three years ago.

Right-back Sergino Dest is on loan from FC Barcelona to AC Milan, while midfielder Tyler Adams joined Leeds from Leipzig during this summer’s transfer window.

What is their FIFA World Ranking and what can England expect from them?

The USA are ranked 16th in the FIFA World Rankings, making them the second-highest team in Group B behind England.

Berhalter usually sets them up in a 4-3-3 formation, with a tendency to use their wingers and launch quick counterattacks in the transition phase.

The side have won seven, drawn four and lost three of their 14 games in qualifying, but have only recorded one win in five since qualifying.
