World Cup result: The Netherlands and Ecuador drew 1-1 in Group A

November 25, 2022 at 1:00 p.m European daylight saving time

Both teams in good form – but Qatar are eliminated from the World Cup

The immediate consequence of this result is that hosts Qatar are eliminated from the competition with a game to go – the first team is eliminated. They lasted a full five days and I think they knew that after losing to Senegal it was all over for them.

As for the Netherlands and Ecuador, both have four points and both are in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages. Holland have Qatar last so we can safely assume they will make it into the last 16. Ecuador only needs a point against Senegal in this great duel.

By far the better performance came from Ecuador tonight. The Dutch looked very limited. We are waiting for news on Enner Valencia’s fitness.

Full-time: Netherlands 1 Ecuador 1

The final whistle sounds. Honors even, with a moral victory for Ecuador.

Last minute pressure on Ecuador

90+6: Ecuador is pushing for a win lately. They earn a corner but Van Dijk is underneath and clears with a header. Time is running out.

Added six minutes

It got lost a bit with all eyes on Valencia, but added six minutes. We’ve played two so far. Still 1:1…

Chance – Noppert Patzer

90+1: My goodness. Noppert hesitates on a clearance and Rodriguez, who has literally stepped onto the field, locks it up, blocks the ball and deflects it almost straight back into the Dutch net. That would have summed up the Netherlands evening – a bit awkwardly.

Valencia on the stretcher

89: This is not good news for Ecuador. Valencia is carried off the pitch on a stretcher after treatment and looks a little distressed. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that he’s ok, but when he reached the touchline he was helped onto the bench by two staff members who were limping badly. Doesn’t look great.

Plata also came off. It’s Kevin Rodriguez and Romario Ibarra’s turn, some final rolls of the dice.

Valencia down and a bit after that

88: The players face each other after Valencia were left on the pitch and the Netherlands continued to play anyway. It looked like Valencia, who had a problem against Qatar, would come off the ball there. It could be that he’s just getting off.

Five minutes to go… England vs USA next

85: That wouldn’t actually be a bad result for Ecuador or Holland. Ecuador would just feel like they deserved much more than a 1-1 draw based on the game record.

We still have five minutes plus stoppage time. The sting is a bit out.

Next up is England versus the USA. Once that’s done, shoot to our live coverage of it.

Ecuador good enough for last eight?

Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro believes the quarter-finals could reach his team. Given that evidence, you wouldn’t give them credit for making sure they take something from tonight and then do the deals against Senegal.

Read an interview with Alfaro.

Dutch subs: Gakpo retired

79: A dream goal by Gakpo but that was his night in short. Since then he has hardly been able to shine. Wout Weghorst replaces him. Marten de Roon replaces Koopmeiners.

Ecuador Sub: Sarmiento at

75: Estrada’s race to the front is over. Jeremy Sarmiento replaces him.

There is a touching story about the number 11 jersey worn by Michael Estrada. Ecuador retired it after Christian Benitez, who wore it for them, died suddenly in 2013. FIFA insists (of course) that teams use any number from one to 26, so the 11 went to Estrada – an emotional number to inherit.

Ecuador paid tribute to Benitez with a celebration after his goal against Qatar.

Chance – Gakpo chips wide, flag goes up

74: Worth mentioning simply because the Dutch offer so little.

Gakpo is miles offside as he runs onto a chipped pass. He praises it from a wide angle and as he does so the flag goes up.

Another Dutch change – Klaessen out

70: We said that the Netherlands needed a change. Van Gaal pulls Klaessen, who has been very quiet so far, and sends Steven Berghuis. Klaessen could only just win the ball in the box from Ecuador, let alone cause damage there.

Brave game from Ecuador

As The Athletic’s stats demon John Muller says here, Ecuador are not afraid to take chances or risk. They really had a big rift with the Dutch. And it doesn’t look like they’re done either.

Chance – Koopmeiners exaggerated

66: It’s been a while since we’ve discussed a Dutch chance, but one presents itself on the edge of the box, through a lay-off to Teun Koopmeiners. However, he comes under the target and it is miles away from the target. His reaction, an annoyed scream, says it all.

Ake Intervention!

65: The Netherlands stretched again as Estrada tries to score a cutback. Nathan Ake dives in to steal the ball from him and that tackle was crucial. The Netherlands are very ragged and lost all security early on. When a second goal comes, it feels like it’s going in one direction.
